Much of the world’s broadband ICT networking capacity is dependent on state-of-the-art satellite-based solutions because of the three fundamental defining characteristics of satellite:

Cost Effectiveness;

Absence of Limitations of Distance, Geography and Location; and,

Rapid, Economic and Reliable Deployment.

In the very many commercial, industrial, government and civil society ‘vertical’ markets around the world the ready availability of – and reliable, cost-effective, access to – efficient means of communication is essential to mission critical operational success.

Nowhere are the facts of vertical market ICT requirements more evident than in the oil & gas exploitation environment.  Satellite-based communications, together with satellite-terrestrial hybrid solutions, already play a vital role within this sector, providing essential connectivity in challenging geographic environments and other physical circumstances, but it is a role which nevertheless has both demand-side and supply-side potential to expand – and expand significantly.

The key is in continuing to bring these perspectives into close proximity – a major element of the global educational brief of the GVF.  To promote and facilitate this proximity, to bring focus to key points of discussion, and to provide networking opportunities for demand (end-user) and supply (vendor) expert practitioners, the GVF has announced a conference for 2007 at which the nature of the communications imperatives of the energy market vertical will be fully addressed:

Oil & Gas Communications 2007: The 2nd Africa and the Middle East Conference will be organised in collaboration with UK Event Management Partners (UK-EMP).  Following the acclaim for the first Oil & Gas Communications event in May 2006 (http://archive.uk-emp.co.uk/Archive.O&G.AME/), the second conference will once again take place in Cairo, Egypt, during May 2007.

This conference will bring together key leaders and experts from the oil & gas sector as well as the communications industry into one high-level discussion and networking forum.  In so doing, the conference will create opportunities for companies in this major global vertical to call upon ICT solutions providers – whether based on terrestrial wireline or wirelesss, or satellite – to match their offerings more closely to the specific demands and requirements of the ‘oil & gas patch’.

The GVF has identified a range of key themes to be explored at Oil & Gas Communications: Africa and the Middle East, which will take place in Cairo, Egypt, in May 2007, including:

The Evolutionary Dynamics of Application and Technology Trends

Bandwidth Supply and Demand

Bandwidth Pricing and Quality of Service

Hybridisation of Communications Solutions Offerings

Satellite Links, Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

Using Communications to Manage Environmental Impact

Oil & Gas e-Commerce

The licensing/Regulatory Environment

Industry Case Studies

The GVF (Global VSAT Forum) is headquartered in London and is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organisation with 200+ members from more than 80 countries – organisations engaged in the delivery of advanced broadband and narrowband satellite services to consumers, and commercial and government enterprises worldwide.
